Improvements when Querying External Databases

Scope

Product: GXplorer Manager, GXquery Manager

Introduction

Several improvements are introduced for the creation of attribute metadatas from Databases that are not associated to a GeneXus Knowledge Base. These improvements result from the integration (in GXplorer/GXquery) of the technologies used by the DBRET tool (DataBase Reverse Engineering Tool 1.2). The most important improvements included are new methods to connect to the Data Base, support for more DBMS and greater capacity to infer the metadata by the tool.

Description

DBRET (DataBase Reverse Engineering Tool) is an evolution of the Data View Generator, a tool used in the previous GXplorer/GXquery version to create attribute metadatas from Databases that were not associated to a GeneXus Knowledge Base.

The new tool introduces improvements and new features that increase the possibilities of GXplorer and GXquery users; some of them are:

New Database connection methods

New methods are available to get connected to the Database with which you will create the metadata from GXplorer/GXquery Manager. The options are ADO.NET, JDBC and ODBC (Datasource and Driver).

Note: The new methods (ADO.NET, JDBC and ODBC Driver) are only available to establish the connection with a Database to load the metadata in GXplorer/GXquery Manager. For the other product components you will have to continue using an ODBC connection.

Support for MySQL DBMS

It is possible to create an attribute metadata from mySQL 3.23.58 or higher version that is not associated to a GeneXus Knowledge base. For further information check mySQL Support.

Greater capacity to infer relationships among attributes

The capacity to infer relations among attributes and tables is significantly greater in the DBRET tool than in the Data View Generator. These improvements are also applicable when creating the metadata from a Database using DBRET. The latter will allow us obtaining a metadata with a better representation of the reality and therefore increasing the power and usefulness of the queries performed by the users.
