A Gateway is represented by the familiar diamond shape and is used to control the divergence and convergence of Sequence Flow. Thus, it will determine traditional decisions, as well as the forking, merging, and joining of paths. Internal Markers will indicate the type of behavior control.

There are four types of gateways:

  • Event: It allows the flow to be diverted into two or more routes.
  • Exclusive: It indicates the evaluation of conditions to choose the route that will be followed. Only one route can be taken.
  • Inclusive: It indicates the evaluation of conditions to choose the route that will be followed. One or more routes can be taken.
  • Parallel: It represents a synchronization point in which, in order to move forward with the flow, all tasks connected to this symbol have to be completed.
